Council officesPlanners for the eastern part of the Thames Gateway are focusing their efforts on major applications and the infrastructure challenges thrown up by more housing demand.

Swale Borough Council area planning officer Graham Thomas told Planning: "Swale is in an exciting period of change, with plans for major growth.

"The borough lies in an attractive part of Kent, which brings challenges. The growing economy has prompted a 25 per cent rise in applications from a year ago.

“We submitted our local plan to the government in April and some people are arguing we have a shortfall in housing. Developments range from 60 to 600 homes, some on green belt land.”

The council is looking to recruit three planners within its development management section.
