Planning Manager

We are recruiting to our North Planning Team – the team covers the North West, North East, Yorkshire, East Midlands and parts of the East of England.  The workload involved will be mainly in the North West and/or the East Midlands, with the option of being based in our satellite office at the National Squash Centre, Manchester, at Sport Park in Loughborough or home based (dependent on location).

£36,000 p.a. plus generous benefits, including healthy lifestyle benefit

Sport England published a new strategy in 2016, ‘Towards an Active Nation’ which reflects the national government strategy for sport, ‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation’.  Our strategy focuses on tackling inactivity, helping those who are active to continue to be active, putting the customer at the heart of what we do, encouraging stronger local collaboration and working with a wider range of partners to encourage innovation and behaviour change.  Planning for health and improving opportunities through the creation of active environments that encourage physical activity can contribute to our wider aims.

We are seeking to recruit to the role of Planning Manager within our busy North Planning Team to lead on the delivery of our high quality statutory and strategic planning functions predominantly across the North West or East Midlands. This will include fulfilling our role as a statutory consultee relating to the protection of playing fields and combining strategic planning and development management skills with specialist guidance and tools to help ensure that the planning system provides environments and places that enable people to benefit from sport and physical activity.

Working closely with colleagues, the role provides a unique opportunity to apply a full breadth of professional planning skills at both local and strategic levels, engaging with a variety of external stakeholders such as local authorities, developers, sports bodies and national organisations across multiple disciplines including planning, leisure, health and education.

Workload is varied ranging from commenting and negotiating on individual planning applications to inputting to site/area master plans, supporting the preparation of local strategies for sports facility provision, steering local planning policies, development of national guidance and involvement in collaborative projects. All activities contribute towards the improved planning, distribution and quality of community sports facilities and physical environments across England in support of our strategic objectives.

Sport England offers excellent training and development opportunities, payment of RTPI subscriptions, along with a healthy living lifestyle payment to promote colleagues’ broader health and wellbeing.

With a track record of achievement candidates must have:

  • A degree in Planning or Geography or related discipline with a post graduate degree/diploma in planning (RTPI recognised) and Corporate MRTPI
  • A practical and detailed knowledge of planning law
  • Experience of working in a local authority or planning consultancy in either policy development, development management (planning applications) or regeneration;
  • A proven track record of successfully working with key partners to deliver a high-quality planning service
  • And be self-motivated with a proven ability to work independently.
