Be where it all happens.
Westminster is at the very heart of London and a crucial part of the World City. It contains instantly recognisable landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus as well as the capital’s internationally renowned shopping thoroughfares of Oxford, Regent and Bond Streets.
Our area comprises a rich mix of vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods including Chinatown, Soho, Mayfair, Covent Garden, St John’s Wood and Knightsbridge. When you add the exciting regeneration projects in the equally diverse and challenging areas around Edgware Road, Harrow Road, Queens Park Estate and Paddington, you will realise why Westminster is one of the most challenging and interesting places to work as a planner. With 11,000 listed buildings, 56 conservation areas and constant pressures for commercial and residential development, you can see why a job with us is unique.
Our job at Westminster City Council is to deliver an unrivalled city of choice and aspiration – A City for All – where all can benefit from our city’s continued success.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care about how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are central to how we work. You’ll build the working relationships and credibility to embed our values at the heart of everything we do.
The City Council regards planning enforcement as a vital part of the overall town planning process and gives it a high corporate priority. You will investigate reports of unlawful building works, uses and advertising throughout the City to agreed procedures and timescales. This will involve site visits (including accessing building sites, climbing scaffolding and a head for heights is required) and surveys, interviews with landowners and developers, and thorough research of records, in order to produce accurate written reports for consideration by planning officers. You may also give evidence in court or at hearings to support subsequent enforcement and prosecution action.
You will have an aptitude for collecting, preparing and presenting evidence, and preferably a working knowledge of/or interest in PACE and related investigatory legislation. You will possess excellent planning, organisational and negotiation skills, with the ability to work under pressure. PC literate with IT related skills, you will also have good customer care and interpersonal skills. Graduate town planners looking to commence or develop their town planning careers would be considered for this role as in-house training will be provided on the investigatory/legislative elements.
We want applications from people who have the passion, determination and ambition to make a difference within Westminster to deliver the very best for our residents, businesses and communities.
If you’re as productive as you are ambitious and collaborative as you are enterprising, this is your chance to take real ownership of your work, right in the heart of iconic Westminster, a true ‘City for All’. This is a unique place where it all happens. And where it could all happen for you.
