Growing momentum around the development of a new nuclear power plant has led Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils to expand their shared planning team.

Phillip Rowson takes up the new role of planning development manager and joined recently from Maldon District Council. Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils share services.

Head of planning and coastal management Philip Ridley told Planning: “With the recent European Commission approval for state subsidy at Hinkley Point in Somerset we are expecting more activity around Sizewell in Suffolk.

“We are looking at all of the implications and investigating a range of mitigation and compensation packages. It's a brilliant opportunity for Suffolk, and my team is significantly involved.

“Hence there is a need to bring in the new post to provide extra capacity to help senior staff manage and ever widening workload.”

The planning team looks after a large swathe of the Suffolk coast, between Lowestoft and Felixstowe, with Southwold and Aldeburgh in between.

Ridley said the authority was also dealing with growing housing demand.
