The London Borough of Havering has recruited a new planning officer.

Tom McCarthy has joined Havering from Braintree District Council.

Planning manager for projects and regeneration Simon Thelwell told Planning: “We are dealing with increasing planning workloads on restoring minerals sites and a large landfill area.

“Tom will lead on applications involving waste and minerals as well as the London Riverside (pictured) and other regeneration areas.

“We are gearing up for major proposals coming forward such as London Riverside and the regeneration of Romford town centre.”

Thelwell added that the improving economy has prompted more demand for minerals for construction: in the last year two big extraction applications had been made. Last year there were no applications.
