A planning consultancy has expanded to help it meet a surge in demand for retirement housing.

The Planning Bureau has recruited Neil Martyn as senior planning associate from AMEC and he will be based in the practice's Coventry office.

Deputy managing director Rob Cartledge told Planning: “Neil has lots of project management experience and will advise on purchasing land and processing it through the planning system for private retirement homes primarily in the East Midlands and into East Anglia.”

He said the Planning Bureau was a subsidiary of McCarthy & Stone, which aimed to double the size of its business in the next five years.

“Talk of the demographic timebomb often focuses on affordable homes and first-time buyers but the issue of the elderly has gone up the government agenda.

“The issues associated with that are so wide that politicians and policy and decision makers are waking up to the fact we need a variety of solutions, not just care in the home.”
