The RTPI exists to advance the science and art of planning for the benefit of the public. This is achieved by setting expectations of competence and professionalism for planning professionals and supporting these through education and lifelong learning
The RTPI takes a broad view of lifelong learning, as referring to the different learning opportunities throughout an individual’s lifetime and career which improve their understanding of, engagement with or practice of spatial planning.

All members of the RTPI (apart from retired members) make a commitment to maintain and develop their expertise through Continuing Professional Development.
Learning for newcomers to planning
The RTPI site contains resources for newcomers to planning including materials for schools, members of the public, councillors and anyone else who is interested in planning to learn more about planning.
